Essential oils are subject to Federal Aviation Association regulations due to their flammability and/or combustibility. Essential oils can be safely transported to numerous destinations with the use of appropriate packaging; however, there are restrictions on the methods and destinations to which they can be sent. Certain oils are phototoxic, which means that they may cause burns or blisters if they are applied to skin that is exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation shortly thereafter. Many cold-pressed oils in the citrus family, including lime, lemon, and grapefruit, as well as angelica and tagetes, are examples of such oils. Nevertheless, this trend is not universal for all citrus oils (sweet orange is an exception). Although they are typically cold-pressed to preserve their delicate fragrances, those that are steam-distilled are less likely to exhibit phototoxic properties.

All of our essential oils are designated for external use only by Mountain Rose Herbs. As per the Code of Ethics of the American Herbal Product Association, this labeling is mandatory. We do not recommend the internal use of essential oils due to safety and regulatory concerns, as they are exceedingly concentrated.

Aromatic compounds in essential oils can cause harm to the liver and kidneys when consumed in large quantities or with protracted and high frequency. This is because the liver and kidneys are responsible for removing the aromatics from the bloodstream, and these organs can become overburdened. Internal use may ultimately result in liver or kidney failure. Furthermore, it is necessary to refrain from administering essential oils to the eyes or mucous membranes to prevent burns or other injuries to these delicate tissues.

To attain the benefits of a botanical internally, we suggest ingesting the herbs as food or seasoning, steeping them as tea, or consuming them as herbal extracts/tinctures, capsules, syrups, or elixirs, which are forms that our bodies are more adept at processing.
